Is it a fashion statement? Why do superheroes wear their underwear on the outside? Everyone knows you wear it on the inside. Turns out, there's an origin to this. And according to Julius Schwartz (DC comics editor from 1944-1986), this was modeled after the garb of aerial circus performers and wrestlers in the era of which the first superheroes wore their underpants outside their tights.

It was only natural for this style of dressing to be adopted by the earliest superhero artists. The most famous of them all is non other than Superman.
