If you decide you want to install a pergola in your backyard, that can add to your home’s property value. This assumes the eventual homebuyers who are looking at the property when you decide to move on from it like that kind of thing. Many do, so you can often make back the money you spend on your pergola.

A motorized pergola might be something that appeals to you. Usually, if you’re talking about a motorized pergola, you’re discussing the roof. However, there are many customizations in this area that go beyond the basics, especially if you’re willing to spend more. Let’s talk about some different options having to do with pergola motorization.

Pergola Roof Motorization

Let’s start by discussing pergola roof motorization. If you buy a pergola from a kit, it might have a louvered roof feature. There are two kinds of these. There’s the type where you can move the roof back and forth by hand, or there’s the kind where you can do so electronically.

Usually, the second option costs more. You might be looking at a pergola that costs hundreds of dollars with no motorized roof versus one that costs thousands with one.

However, you may want to pay that higher price tag if you don’t like the idea of having to get up to maneuver the roof back and forth by hand. Traditional pergolas are usually those that come without motorized roofs, but more modern, high-end ones often give you this option.

Pergola Door Motorization

You can also get pergolas that remain open to the elements or ones with closing doors. Ones with no doors are sometimes difficult to use in rough weather. If you live somewhere that gets punishing storms, you may want to think about this.

If you buy a pergola with a door that opens and closes, though, it will likely cost more if you get one that’s motorized. A motorized door that slides shut on your pergola can give you some privacy if you want to spend some alone time with a spouse or partner.

Motorized Pergola Remote Controls

This leads us to a third way a pergola can be motorized. Whether you have a structure with a motorized roof, door, or both, you can usually press a button on the wall to move the roof or door into the position you want it. However, you can also get a pergola where the roof or door can be moved into position using a remote control.

As you might expect, this is almost always going to cost more than a simpler pergola setup. A door or roof that you slide using a remote control takes more elaborate electrical components. You must either pay for someone to install them or do so yourself. The second option will save you some money, but only attempt it if you feel very confident in your DIY skill set.

Consider these options when looking at the pergola kit or model that you feel works best for you.
