Will HBO Or Netflix Clean Up At The 2019 Primetime Emmys?
Aug 16, 2019 21:13
It has been another incredible year for HBO, mostly thanks to the roaring success of Game Of Thrones. The network has earned an incredible 137 Emmy Nominations, 32 of which are for GoT. That means it also broke the record for the most nominations for a single show, previously held by NYPD, which received 26 nominations in 1994.
But for all of it’s success, Netflix is hot on it’s heals with 117. So how will they fair on September 23rd when the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards are announced? The odds are overwhelmingly in their favour with 44.5% of the total 571 nominations going to either HBO or Netflix for 2019.
Game Of Thrones isn’t HBO’s only success however. Barry and Chernobyl have also managed to hold their own. Barry was created by and stars Bill Hader as a hitman from the Midwest who travels to LA and finds himself joining an acting class. The dark comedy earned Hader and his co-star, Henry Winkler, Emmy’s last year for Leading and Supporting actors in a comedy.
Chernobyl is one the most critically shows of recent years. It was universally lauded and has managed to generate one of the highest scores possible on IMDB with 9.5/10 from over 335,000 votes. As a Limited Series, cast members including Jared Harris, Emily Watson and Stellan Skarsgard are all up for nominations.
So how will Netflix compete? They may not have the likes of GoT in their arsenal but scratch the surface and they still have some gems including Ava DuVernay’s When The See Us, which generated 16 nominations. It is also one of Netflix’s most watched shows ever.
The quirky and brilliantly written Russian Doll follows with 13 nominations including Outstanding Comedy and Lead Actress in a Comedy for Natasha Lyonne, who also co-created the show with Amy Poehler and Leslye Headland.
And of course they have the very reliable Ozark starring Jason Bateman, Laura Linney and Julia Garner. The show is currently in production for Season 3, which will air on Netflix in 2020.
So will either HBO or Netflix clean up at the Emmy’s in September? Will it be a two-horse race? The feeling is that GoT will do very well not least because the show aired its final season and it should go out with a bang. But Emmy voters like to throw up the odd surprise and they do love The Marvelous Mrs Maisel as evidenced by its eight Emmy wins in 2018 and its 20 noms this year!
