When people talk about the UK, probably the first thought that comes to mind is the Windsor Castle, the Royal Family, David Beckham, maybe William Shakespeare or the unforgettable, David Bowie.
For decades, the country has taken the world by a storm when it comes to music. Whether the genre is country, pop, rock, house, or EDM, the UK has produced the most talented artists of all time. Starting from Queen to Genesis, Ozzy Osbourne, and John Lennon, their music is still played on radios, is responsible for entertaining millions, and is appreciated worldwide.
Even in recent years, musical talent rising from Britain is intense and shows no signs of slowing down. Artists such as Ed Sheeran, One Direction and Ellie Goulding are dominating the pop scene while Adele and Sam Smith are winning in the Contemporary R&B genre.
UK is also to thank for giving the world electro-music DJs like Calvin Harris, the first British solo artist to reach more than a billion streams on Spotify, and the winner of the Ivor Novello Songwriter of the Year Award, Above & Beyond, the winners of Tune Of The Year Awards for three consecutive years, Andy C, winner of the title in the 2011 Drum and Bass Arena Awards, and the club scene magician, Lempo.
Mike McGuinness, better known as Lempo, is a Manchester-based music producer, label owner, radio presenter, and an entrepreneur. A popular DJ around Manchester's top clubs, he is now stirring hype in the electronic music industry and is gaining recognition worldwide for his exceptional records.
LEMPO ON THE ROAD TO INFINITY
Micheal Edward McGuinness was born on 8th June 1983 in Manchester. He was a resident of Knutsford, UK, and lived there for 16 years. Even as a child, Mike was passionate about creating music. His love for the industry helped him to join the club scene when he was just 17 years old.
Mike started his career as DJ in various nightclubs across Manchester and Cheshire. For four years, he DJ-ed at Knutsford's Room (which later became Moda), before spending five years at Amber Lounge. He joined a club brand named "Bitch" in 2006 and started residencies at Manchester's legendary nightclubs, Venus and Sankeys, where he was dubbed 'The Party Starter' for his role filling the warm-up slots before the headline acts would perform. He furthered his reach with residencies in Liverpool, Leeds, and London, and that is when he took on the guise, "Lempo," while actively touring throughout the country.
Due to his performances for brands such as Ministry of Sound, Pacha, and Cream, Lempo was voted Manchester's number one DJ on 'The DJ List.' He started gaining more recognition when he performed at the event, Parklife Festival, the annual event held by The Warehouse Project, where he featured for four years from 2012 to 2015. For Lempo, it was a milestone, and that is when his career as a DJ truly began. Lempo's performances for various international brands have seen him support artists such as Disclosure, Steve Aoki, and Skrillex.
Lempo released his first full-length EP titled 'The Death of Micky Fidget' on Wonked Records in June 2010. Lempo launched his own imprint Applique Music in 2011 with the labels first release, 'The Best Times' featuring Brazilian chanteuse Angelita Jimenez which reached #2 on Trackitdown, #3 on Traxsource and #21 on Beatport, gaining support from Eric Morillo and Roger Sanchez.
On the 59th Annual Grammy Awards, Lempo released, 'Goinout' which featured Canadian MC Flipside. The single was shortlisted for Best Dance Track with a first-round ballot nomination. Mike's popularity was growing, and his tracks were gaining placements at various broadcasting networks, including Channel 4 (UK), The X-Factor (Australia), and Disney XD (USA).
Lempo has worked on official remix commissions for artists such as Snoop Dogg, General Levy, and Dawn Penn. His career also includes major collaborative projects. A few highlighted works from his career include the single ‘Jack In Boots’ for Susu Music with Nancy Sinatra in 2012. The release reached #13 in the Music Week Club Chart and ranked number #36 on Beatport. Also, in 2012, a collaboration with Will Gold, ‘Boston Boogie,’ would become Lempo's first number #1 when it topped the Trackitdown store.
2013 witnessed Lempo collaborate with many artists on the album ‘Done & Dusted’, including Will Clarke on 'Sound Of The Horns,' House music legends K-Klass on 'Brass Attack,' and most notably with the producer of Craig David's platinum-selling 'Born To Do It' album — Mark (The Artful Dodger) Hill on 'Playboy Bunny' which featured Hollyoaks actor Ashley Taylor Dawson on vocal. The collab with Artful reached #1 on Juno Download and #54 on iTunes while gaining support on BBC Radio One with plugs from Greg James and Nick Grimshaw.
In 2014 Mike produced an experimental studio album titled ‘The Fat Lady’ alongside Clair Savage under the pseudonym ‘Ninjury’. Eight tracks from the album gained number one chart placements - six on Juno Download and two on Traxsource, most notably ‘Cowabunga’ which was plugged on BBC Radio One by Danny Howard and supported by Claude VonStroke with a play at Ultra Music Festival in Miami.
Lempo has also had releases with Ruff Diamond on the single ‘Dance Master’ in 2019, Princess Superstar on ‘Turnin' Trix’ and Chuck Roberts on ‘Open House’, both in 2020. He has also worked with American singer-songwriter, Roland Clark, for 'House Doctor' on Todd Terry's InHouse Records in 2017. The duo is set to release a new single, ‘Dance Without a Reason’ on BMG subsidiary, Strictly Rhythm in June 2020!
LEMPO ON THE ROAD TO RADIO
Mike is not new to the world of broadcasting. He hosted ‘The Lempo & Carr Show,’ which was broadcasted weekly on Cheshire FM 92.5 from November 2010 until moving to Manchester's Unity Radio FM 92.8 in January 2012 - where he hosted on ‘The Bitch Show’ for two years from 2012 to 2014.
In November 2014, Lempo switched from the airwaves to Mixcloud, hosting his ‘Twisted Melon’ show, which is being broadcast on Café Mambo Radio and Data Transmission radio, which is consistently topping Mixcloud's house music charts.
LEMPO ON THE ROAD TO SAVING LIVES
2018 saw Lempo diagnosed with a severe heart condition. Since the disease could have been fatal, Mike had to undergo critical heart surgery. The recovery was slow, and once he was better, he released a single, "No More," using a sample of his own heartbeat. The song was a tribute to the British Heart Foundation, and it received an overwhelming response with the music video featuring cameo appearances from a raft of celebrities including Shayne Ward (Coronation Street), Rowetta Satchell (Happy Mondays), Wayne Lineker (Ocean Beach Club) and Danny Howard (BBC Radio One). It has gained more than 100,000 streams since its release and the single was able to rank itself among the top 40 on iTunes. The money Mike earned from his single has been donated to fund cardiovascular research in the UK.
Today, Lempo is one of the most prominent figures in the UK's music industry. His exceptional music and his support for Cardiovascular research are credible. His love for creating music is helping him reach fans, not just in the UK, but across the globe.
