Woke up this morning with an itchy red spot? It is probably a bite from a bed bug. These pesky little pests are usually found crawling in your mattress or nearby, especially during the summers.

If you suspect that bed bugs have invaded your mattress, it is time to take quick action. While you wait for pointe pest exterminators to completely rid of bed bugs professionally, here are 4 simple DIY steps to take before things get messy.

Start by Killing Bed Bugs in Your Bed

One of the first things to do is hit the bed bugs where it hurts the most. Bed bugs are called bed bugs because they love living in your mattress. So the first thing you need to do is to strip your bed of all sheets, pillowcases, and other bedding items.

Seal these items in a plastic bag to prevent the pests from escaping and infesting other areas of your home such as the sofas and seats. Take this bag straight to a washing machine and wash the sheets with hot water.

Dry the bedding in the sun and allow it to kill any bed bugs or eggs hiding in the sheets.

Now use a vacuum cleaner to remove any fecal droppings, eggs, and shells from your mattress, pillows, and across the cracks and crevices in the bed frame. You can also take your mattress out and let it soak in the sun. This will cause bed bugs to escape the bedding.

Clean Your Room

One of the best ways to get rid of bug bites and other household pests is to regularly clean your room. When you have removed the mattress and sheets from your bedroom, start by cleaning everything in the room.

You should clean all furniture, books, baseboards, edges of carpets, cupboards, and everything else that is in the room.

The best way to do a thorough cleaning of the room is to use a vacuum cleaner and steamer in combination.

Before you start, make sure you remove all the clutter in the room. Hanging clothes, shoes on the floor, laundry baskets, and everything else should be moved to your backyard or kept in the sun.

Vacuum everywhere and everything in your room including your bed, furniture, cupboards, carpets, the floor under the carpet, and if possible, your clothes. We recommend washing all your clothes immediately before cleaning the bedroom.

Use Household Pest Spray

While household pest sprays aren’t as strong as the solution professional pest exterminators use, they can still get the job done if you know where to spray. Start by spraying in all cracks and crevices of your bed and your room.

Move to the carpet, behind doors, inside the cupboard, curtains, and your windows. Make sure to use plenty of sprays while your mouth is covered. Once you have sprayed every nook and corner of the room, close the door and let it remain closed for at least 30 minutes.

This should exterminate most bed bugs in the room. However, if you have a large infestation, bed bugs could have also moved to other rooms. In such cases, help from a professional pest company is highly recommended.
