5 Common Misconceptions About Cannabidiol (CBD) Oil
Dec 01, 2018 01:51
CBD is one of hundreds of cannabinoids which can be extracted from plants of the cannabis genus including hemp and marijuana. While CBD oil has a wide range of health benefits, such as treating anxiety and depression, calming epileptic seizures, and alleviating various skin problems, there are several misconceptions about CBDthat are actually far from the truth.
In the interest of dispelling common CBD misconceptions, let’s explore some of the most frequently mis-thrown stones.
CBD Oil Derived from Marijuana is More Effective Than That from Hemp
Cannabidiol oil is the same, regardless of its original source. Whether you’re using hemp-derived CBD or marijuana-derived CBD, all the body’s biological processes and receptors specific to CBD remain the same.
CBD Oil Gets You High
Many people are missing out on the great health benefits of CBD oil simply because they’ve been made to believe that it is intoxicating. Proper CBD oil won’t get you high.
The cannabinoid in marijuana that creates a ‘high’ is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). One of the primary differences between hemp and marijuana is that hemp must contain no more than 0.3 per cent THC, and, as a result, hemp-derived CBD oil will never produce a high.
CBD Oil is Not Safe for Kids
The misconception that CBD Oil can only be used by adults is widely believed. The truth, however, is that even children can safely and effectively use CBD.
In fact, children struggling with epileptic seizures have been reported to experience seizures far less frequently after using CBD Oil as a treatment. It’s also worth noting that there are no known sides effects of CBD oil—unlike some traditional anti-seizure medications.
CBD Is a Sedative
Contrary to the common belief that CBD gives various cannabis strains and products sedative properties, CBD is not a sedative.
According to Dr Ethan Russo, a neurologist and medical scientist, CBD is actually myrcene. Myrcene is a terpene that usually exists in abundance in Indica-dominant strains, which is responsible for the sedative properties.
Moreover, CBD has biphasic properties. This means you’ll get different effects when you take it in low, moderate, or high doses. Low CBD doses are normally alerting and can neutralise some of the sedative properties of various cannabis strains.Conversely, high CBD doses can aggravate sedative effects when interacting with other chemicals.
CBD Products are Illegal
While CBD products can come from cannabis, they are not necessarily illegal. CBD products that are made from agricultural hemp are legal in the UK as long as their THC content is below 0.2 per cent.
While studies on the potential of CBD oil in treating many common health problems are still ongoing, the findings so far are promising. It’s also important to note, however, that most of the studies are still in pre-clinical lab stages and not yet definitive. Nonetheless, it is imperative that you separate fact from fiction as far as CBD oil is concerned, so you don’t miss out on its wonderful health benefits due to misinformation.
