Rich people buy lots of stuff, and Richard Branson is no different. His famous private island was bought for a fraction of the original price, but his primary intention of buying it was to impress a girl. He first traveled to Necker island in 1977 with Joan Templeman, who would later on become his wife.

Branson said he was madly trying to come up with a way to impress Joan, so he called up the realtor to express his interest.

He didn't have enough cash to buy it, but offered $100k for it at first.

He explained in a blog post that he and Joan strolled around the island and dreamed up plans for turning it into a haven for musicians.

The original asking price for the island was $6 million. A year later, he was offered the island for $180,000.

Eleven years later, Branson married Templeman on Necker island, and have since turned it into a paradise.
