In the Hunger Games books by Suzanne Collins, The Capital is famous for its parties, and after this one, you will be too! Parties in the Capital are crazy, luxurious and decadent: think Effie Trinket and Caeser Flickerman - glitz, glamour and looking a little over the top. OK ... majorly over the top! Here a couple of ideas on how to get your Hunger Games party the best of the season.
In keeping with the Games, the Cornucopia is the hub of all food, goods and weapons. Players in the Hunger Games will spend the first hours of the event fighting it out for possession of resources, which could be the difference between their survival or demise.
Fashion your own cornucopia as the centre of the party: where the food and drink are held and where the seating and dancing areas of your Capital party will be based around. If you’re holding your Capital party outdoors, an outdoor fireplace will add to the ambience of the evening and fits the theme nicely – particularly if you have people seated around it. With the party held at night, make sure you have plenty of lighting – how else will everyone see how outrageous your outfit is otherwise!?
Hang lights from the trees if you are outdoors, or around the inside of your home, like these from Spencer’s http://www.spencersonline.com/home-and-dorm_party-lighting_led-lights/. Paper lanterns and Mason jar lights would also look amazing, and are a creative addition to the Capital like luxury.
No crazy Capital party would be complete without flashing lights, coloured filters, and an amazing laser projector. In fact, the bigger and crazier the better! A laser projector is a perfect prop for your Capital party, and are easily hired from party supply stores.
For a bit of fun, look up drink recipes that use the famous poisoned berries from the arena, such as these Hunger Games inspired cocktails.
This one all depends on whether you’re keeping your dress code to fashions of the Capital or to the districts. If you opt for the District Tributes idea, on inviting your guests, assign them a district they must dress to the style of. The Districts are allocated as:
Tell your guests to use their imaginations when it comes to district costuming!
If you want to stick to the Capital style, think outlandish: blue and pink hair, crazy fake eyelashes and huge lips with brightly coloured, eccentrically patterned and shiny metallic clothing. The Hunger Games films are a great source of inspiration - you'll find all sorts of outfits in the Capital scenes, in a huge array of colours and styles.
Remember that people in the Capital also like to paint their bodies, wear outlandish makeup, use strange props and colour and style their hair in truly zany ways. Picture the most ridiculous outfit you can imagine, and there you go – Capital ready in no time!
