It is a sad day in Internet history. One of our favorite sites is getting shut down..by Ikea! The site known as IkeaHackers is where a community of its fans gather to showcase their mods and hacks. It's also great marketing for Ikea itself, which is why it is just mind-boggling as to why they want it closed down.
The site started eight years ago by Kuala Lumpur based fan
Jules Yap. She started the site by posting some ideas of products and the hacks that turned them into something new and exciting. Since then it has grown big, and she began to sell small ads to support what had become something bigger than she had ever expected.
Then recently, Yap got a cease and desist letter over her use of the trademarked Ikea name. She is now giving up the website. Read her blog post
here.
Ikea is making a big mistake. This site practically advertises everything they have and all the creative stuff people can do with their furniture. Is Ikea really angry that Yap used their name, but why wait 8 years to send a cease and desist letter? Or is the fact that she is now making money from the site?
Ikeahackers will be missed.
