Reasons To Think Twice Before Drinking Water On An Airplane

Here's something to think about the next time you're feeling a little thirsty during your flight. Newly released data obtained from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) showed that tap water aboard more than 1 in 10 commercial airplanes regularly tests positive for coliform bacteria which covers to a wide group of organisms, including fecal bacteria and E. coli (i.e. poop bacteria, ew).
Turns out that U.S airlines have been having this problem for awhile. Tests conducted in 2004 found coliform contamination rates aboard U.S. airlines as high as 15 percent. In 2009, the EPA issued new safety rules for aircraft drinking water. But despite the new regulations, it appears that contamination still regularly occurs.
So unless the water comes straight from a bottle, you'll probably be better off sticking with juice or alcohol.
