Having your home burglarized is a scary experience. This is an emotional time, and you likely aren’t thinking logically about moving forward with improved security in and around your home. The best thing that you can do, however, is to immediately fix the security issues and work with a locksmith to improve security in and around your home. This is going to give you peace of mind and make it easier for you to feel safe.

The first thing that you need to do, if you haven’t already, is to call the police and file a report. If you came home to see a break-in or the remnants of one, do not enter the property. Use your cell phone or go to a neighbour's to call the authorities. Once the cops have cleared your home and declared it safe for re-entry, you will need to walk through and make a detailed list of anything that is missing.

You’ll also want to call your insurance company, and maybe make an extra copy of the list of items stolen to provide them. If you don’t call the insurance company right away, you need to at least call them within 24 hours. They will probably send an adjuster to investigate the property, so you’ll want to leave things un-tampered with. You may need to find somewhere to stay in the meantime.

After the Storm

Once things calm down and you’ve taken care of the police and insurance stuff, you can start thinking about how to fix the security issues or improve your home security. If they came in through an open door or window, you will need to be more diligent about keeping things locked for your family’s protection. You can also look into smart locks and automatic locks, along with other security upgrades.

You should consider changing your locks if they were able to pick the locks or if they broke a door handle in some way. A locksmith can assist with this, and may also have other advice for protecting your home from future threats. If you want to take your home back after a break-in, you have a lot of options for protection.
