Girls’ Generation wants to be called artists instead of idols

Girls’ Generation seriously discussed their position as musicians in the industry.
The group appeared on a Japanese documentary program MBS’ ‘Jounetsu-Tairiku’ and revealed their great life as singers as well as their behind stories about their hardships and concerns as a group.
During the interview, the members were asked to place themselves between ‘idol’ and ‘artist’. Jessica expressed her disappointment at what the word ‘idol’ has come to mean, saying “an idol is someone who is admired by the youth, but these days, any young singer can be called an idol.”
Sooyoung added, “Honestly, we want to be called an artist.” Yuri then pointed out that those titles cannot be decided on one’s own and that the right is given to the public.
