Most people who go on holiday to Canada for the first time, are very impressed by the distances in Canada. What appears to be a small part on the map actually turns out to be a few hours' drive. Also, many roads in Canada are not of the quality that we are used to in our country, so an hour's drive does not mean that you can travel 100 kilometers. It would of course be a shame if you were just driving during your vacation to Canada and half of these sites were passing by.

Canada is such a huge country that you cannot clearly call one climate. In the central part, the largest part of the country, there is a continental climate, in the Rockies a mountain climate, on the east and west coast a maritime climate and in the north cold maritime climate and a polar climate. In the vicinity of the large lakes and around Hudson Bay, the climate is more erratic and gives more rainfall. So there is quite a bit of variety. Just like with the climates, it is important to know how the seasons work in Canada. Of course you don't want traveling through Canada to be spoiled because you have chosen the wrong season. Or were you only gone two weeks later, so that you didn't find the beautiful glacial lakes in the ice? The seasons in Canada, just like the many climates, vary considerably. With the exception of the coastal regions, the transitional seasons such as autumn and spring are of relatively short duration and in some years the winter can easily change to summer in two to three weeks. This also applies to autumn. In some areas, such as the Rockies, the falling of the leaves can be accompanied by the first snow showers of the winter, while others benefit from a wonderful Indian Summer. In particular in the mountains, and certainly in the higher parts, the weather can just change. So it is always important, especially in the mountains, to be well prepared on the road. Adjust your clothing and equipment accordingly.

From March 2016, all travelers to Canada are required to request an eTA Canada form. Just as the ESTA form is mandatory for travelers flying to the US, Canada has created the ETA form. A one-time application is sufficient to be able to travel to Canada without any problems. Read all relevant information about the ETA form here. Handle your ESTA or ETA form carefully. A frequently made mistake is entering the wrong passport number on the application. You get an agreement based on a wrong passport number and you are therefore not allowed to board the aircraft.

Take precautions when you travel with your rental car or camper, especially in the north of Canada, for example in Yukon or Northwest Territories. The distances are huge and you don't have a store or gas station on every street corner, just like in the Netherlands. There are also regions where you cannot reach with your phone.
