A group of Chinese designers have redesigned the hanging strap on a subway. Called Cyclean, the design is a self-cleaning conveyor-belt-like hanging subway strap.

Designed by Li Jiyang, Liu Tao, Qiu Zhen, Zeng Jiayu, and Zhou Shen, it works in a way where you pull one end of the strap loop, while the remaining strap goes back into the contained chamber. Inside the chamber, the strap passes through spools and is cleaned with disinfectant before it comes out as the strap you hold on to.



Each unit does not require power and is self-contained, allowing it to be hung on existing poles and structures. Cyclean was awarded a Red Dot Design Award this year for its functionality and progressiveness.
