Internationally renowned Chinese artist Ai Weiwei recently opened his "According to What?" exhibition at the
Perez Art Museum in Miami. Some of his highly symbolic works are from his personal memories, perhaps the most critical one being his "River Crabs" installation.
The large scale of red and brown crabs looks rather literal, but the meaning behind it lies in its name. "He Xie" which means 'River Crabs' is a homophone with the Chinese word for the euphemistic "harmony" that the Chinese government intends to preserve by censoring the Internet, and is used to dodge word filters employed for that purpose. Ai's aptly named exhibit is a more modern and Internet-attuned contrast to his more nostalgic and reflective pieces such as the Moon Case and Kippe installations on display.
The exhibition runs from now through March 16, 2014. Check out the full coverage
