Will The Sagrada Familia ever be completed? Designed by the famous Catalan engineer-architect Antoni Gaudí, millions of tourists visit the uncompleted basilica every year. Much of what they see today though, will be altered when the work finally finishes in 2026.
A new video, released by the Sagrada Família Foundation, shows off just what it might look like when finished. Combining it with helicopter footage and computer renderings, the structure's final stages take shape before your eyes. Best to visit now before it changes to this.
The renderings give us a good idea of how it will look like in 13 years time. The date is anything but coincidental and it is intended to mark the centennial anniversary of Gaudi's death.
The architect was neck deep in the project at the time of his passing in 1926, and was only quarter finished then. much of the details have yet to be worked out, and then there was the Spanish Civil War, which left nealy all of the master's drawings in tatters.
But all is not lost. Gaudi did leave behind a system of geometric based rules that have been crucial to finishing the church.
That process has been overseen by architect Jordi Bonet, whose father had worked under Gaudí himself. With some help, the project has been accelerated and Bonet has directed the necessary design decisions and detailing that Gaudi left blank.
So finally, in 13 years time will this piece of work finally finish.
