Rustam Gilfanov: “Feedback is always a two-way process”

We live in a feedback world. People constantly evaluate us, we get advice and recommendations, encounter criticism. It’s impossible to ensure the employees' development process without feedback. Research shows that if the feedback offered properly, it increases employee productivity and satisfaction with their job.
Rustam Gilfanov, IT-businessman and investor, co-founder of an international IT-company, tells us how to provide proper feedback to employees and encourage them to grow.
According to Gilfanov, some people make their career by analyzing received feedback. Such people have a growth mindset and they are willing to develop their careers. Unlike their colleagues who have a fixed mindset, they consider feedback as an opportunity for professional growth.
1. Provide timely feedback
Ideally, you should make it within 24-48 hours, while it is still possible to do something and fix the result or to offer support to your employee. Once co-workers get used to regular feedbacks, they will no longer be afraid of it and will be open to constructive criticism.
2. Be specific
When delivering your critics, base your speech on objective facts and examples, not on the employee’s personality or habits. Vague feedback might lead to confusion. It is important to speak about that you know first-hand. You should not rely on the opinion of third parties.
3. Focus on positive change
The feedback should guide your employee towards positive changes. Explain to him or her how the correction of the shortcomings would affect his or her career in the future.
4. Don’t forget to express your gratitude
Commend your employee for the good work. Positive feedback will make your colleague feel valuable and important for the company.
5. Define areas for growth and development
The goal of positive feedback is to change employee behavioural patterns. Define two or three priority areas for professional advancement and clarify the motivation. Thus, you will help your colleagues to grow.
Rustam Gilfanov notes that feedback has nothing to do with criticism and pressure. Feedback should inspire changes and build stuff confidence.
