General Requirements

There are some basic requirements you must complete in order to become a licensed real estate agent. These are:

  • You must be at least 18 years old (this also depends on your state)
  • Be a resident of the United States of America
  • Have the required education needed by your state
  • Pass the real estate license exam decreed by your state

This is a top-level checklist in terms of what you need to cover to become a real estate agent. Read on to find out what other requirements and procedures you need to fulfill in order to start practicing right away.

Step 1: Check your state’s licensing requirements

Every state has its own requirements that you will need to get your license. You can check out the state’s real estate commission website to get the relevant information. There will be a page called “Steps to Licensing” that will be very useful to you. Make sure you read each and every requirement so you don’t miss anything later.

Step 2: Enroll in a Pre Licensing Course

You can study in whichever way you like to complete your prelicensing education requirements. Make sure you pick a school that has a good reputation and resources available for your education. You can also study online but it’s recommended that you take classes so you’re aware of what the exam will look like and someone can keep track of your progress.

Step 3: Apply to sit the real estate salesperson exam

This is an important step in the process. Make sure you keep track of the whole application process in your state so you can sit the exam right after your licensing classes finish. Each state has its own date for the exam and you have to pay a fee. Some states also ask you for biometric verification so don’t delay. Check right away and make sure you’re on the right track!

Step 4: Pass the exam

Of course, this is the most important part of the process! Make sure you prepare really well before the day of the exam so you can pass with flying colors on the day. You might need additional study time in order to get the grade you want, so put in those extra hours. They will all be worth it later.

Step 5: Find a real estate broker

Just because you passed your exam, doesn’t mean you can start practicing. You won’t be able to get your license unless you find a broker who is willing to fill your paperwork in with you. Once all the required forms are accepted, you will officially be allowed to practice in your state!

Good luck with the real estate agent licensing process!
