Today is Back To The Future Day. And as it turns out, there are tons of things we probably didn't know about the movie at all. Because, here are all the ways the films could have gone in a different direction altogether.
1. No one wanted to go near it. It was rejected by every studio, 40 times.
2. The original script used a refrigerator to travel through time. Not the DeLorean.
3. In the refrigerator version, Marty McFly accidentally time-travels while attempting suicide.
4. They decided to use a DeLorean in order to keep the joke in the film that it was a UFO.
5. To achieve time travel speeds, 88 mph was used because it looked nice on the digital speedometer.
6. The lightning scene was added because it was cheaper than "driving into a nuclear test site to harness the power of a nuclear explosion" to travel back in time.
7. The movie almost got named "Spaceman From Pluto."
8. Eric Stolz was originally cast as Marty. But was replaced by Michael J. Fox.
9. Lea Thompson didn't like the fact that Michael J. Fox was cast at first.
10. Most of the movie was shot at night to accommodate Fox's obligations to the TV show, Family Ties.
11. Fox didn't like filming in the DeLorean because the time-circuits box was sharp and would cut his hand every time he changed gears.
