Most of us think that standing in a doorway during earthquake is a good idea. That's false as you're more likely to be hurt by the door swinging wildly in a doorway or trampled by people trying to hurry outside if you’re in a public place. These are a few tips when you feel the ground is shaking beneath your feet. Make sure you practise it and don't panic!
If you're indoors, stay there. Drop to the ground in an inside corner of the building and cover your head and neck with your hands and arms just in case there isn't a table or desk near you. Don't try to run to another room just to get under the table, and stay away from exterior walls, glass, heavy furniture, and kitchen. Always remember to stay away from windows and outside walls, and do not use the elevator.
If you stay outside, just stay outside. Avoid nearing building with glass windows, bricks, power lines, or other components that may be falling. Remember not to run outside because trying to run in an earthquake is risky, as the ground is moving and you can easily fall or be injured by debris or glass.
If you're driving or in a car, pull over to the side of the road, stop, and stay inside the car until the earthquake stops. Remember to set the parking brake, and avoid overpasses, bridges, power lines, signs and other hazards.
