Microsoft revealed their Surface 2 tablet today packed with a lot of spec bumps. Its most important upgrade might just be its accessories.
Battery life was the focus for Microsoft, given the previous generation only managed around three hours. Its internal Surface Pro battery is 75 percent better, and it will also get a boost from its new Power Cover.
The add-on will contribute an extra 30 watt hour battery. That's great news if you're looking to last a little longer when on the road.
The bad news? The Power Cover will set you back $200 on top of the $900 you have to spend on the Surface 2.
Microsoft also announced a Surface docking station that comes with three USB 2.0, one USB 3.0, Mini DisplayPort, audio in/out. It can also power up two external monitors.
The Type Cover is also thinner now, and puts the full keyboard Surface cover at the same bulk as last year's touch-input cover. The keyboard is also backlit with automatic dimming after ten seconds of non-use.
The Type Cover 2 (above) will set you back $130 at the same time as the tablets themselves, while the revamped Touch Cover 2 costs $120, same as last year's models.
Then there's the Music Cover, which is a DJ-friendly display protection that trades in a traditional keyboard for volume sliders, function keys, and other mash-up makers. It attaches to Surface Pro, Surface 2, and Surface Pro 2, and will be available October 22nd as part of a Surface Music Kit.
