Designed by engineers at Ohio State University have come up with a new lens design that can focus on any object without having to be switched.
The lens is made from a flexible polymer while the design resembles that of an insect’s compound eye. Tiny channels in the main body help supply the fluid to each of the small dome-shaped pockets, enabling the user to alter the lens’ shape and focus. The compound eye design also helps provide a wide angle of view since each is pointed in a different direction
This lens design works similar to that of human eyes, which can easily
shift focus between several objects by contracting the muscles in the eye to adjust the focal point of the image. According to the researchers, the next stage is to see how this technology can developed for electronic gadgets.
