Five stars are the most you can get from the NHTSA crash safety scale. The Tesla Model S just
scored 5.4 stars. Yes. It broke the scale. How is that possible?
Tesla says that the Model S did so well and scored five in every single category and subcategory. The NHTSA doesn't have a rating higher than five, but it does record when something exceeds the five star level.
The Model S doesn't have an engine up front, so because of that, it gives it huge crumple zones to absorb impact. The frame is strong too because of the batteries.
