Can files be recovered after a computer power failure?

There is no worse feeling than having a power failure while you’re on the computer. You could be working on some important documents one minute and then suddenly have your power cut off the next minute. Even if the power failure only lasts for a couple of seconds, that is all it takes for files and data to be lost. If you don’t have a recovery option in place, then your files and data will be lost forever.
Most of the time, computer power failure is caused by a power outage. You can never predict when a power outage is going to take place unless there is a heavy storm outside. When a power outage does occur, it can cause files to get erased or go missing from your hard drive. Sometimes the files will even become corrupt.
However, in many cases, you can recover the files from your hard drive that have simply gone missing or become invisible on the system. There are data recovery software programs that specialize in tracking these invisible files and folders on the computer. But there is no guarantee that they will find them for sure. It all depends on how soon you start the recovery process after the initial power outage took place.
Steps for Recovering Files
Once the power to your computer is restored, do not take any further actions with the applications and documents that you had open before. If you were to open a new document or save new information to the hard drive, then it will overwrite the invisible data files that may exist within the same folder. If those invisible data files are overridden, then you won’t be able to retrieve them again.
The next step is the recovery process. As previously mentioned, you need to download a data or file recovery software program. Some examples of such programs include MiniTool Power Data Recovery and R-Undelete. They can both be downloaded for free, although the latter only offers a free trial period. But if you’re worried about data recovery because you experience frequent power outages, then a file recovery program may be a worthy investment.
After you have downloaded the file recovery program, the next step is to install the software by double-clicking on the executable file and following the setup instructions. Following the installation, you simply double click on the new icon that was created on the desktop.
Next, you will select the drive on your computer that has the missing files on it. Most recovery software programs let you select the file types that you’re searching for. This will save you a lot of time from having to sort through the hundreds or even thousands of files that’ll come up in the search results.
Start the scanning process so that the software can scan the entire drive for those missing files. If the titles of the missing files come up in the search results, then click on those titles and choose to “Recover” them. Again, there is no guarantee you’ll see the files come up. But the sooner you start the recovery process, the more likely that you’ll find them.
It is probably safe to say that the vast majority of us appreciate being able to safely go about our business. We are not looking to cause trouble or have it find us. With that in mind, most of us at least make a minimal effort to secure our homes. But cost can be a factor in determining just how far we go with home security. Read more
