When looking for a new business sign for your company, there are many facets that you need to take into consideration, other than just the sign design.

Where will the sign be positioned? Will the target market be in easy eye shot? What times of day will your sign need to be visible?

Armed with many answers and a multitude of scenario’s you need to decide who you are trying to attract, what will entice them into your store and what signage medium would help you achieve this.

If your business trades throughout the day or into the evening, it is essential that your business can be seen.

The best type of signage to be seen around the clock, is something that is brightly illuminated.

2 main types spring to mind:

LED display lighting or traditional glass Neon signage

LED flex is manufactured using PVC and acrylic and is powered by LED lighting which is protected by a rubber tubing.

If you are looking for a more robust sign, or will be needing to transport your signage to various events around the country, LED may be more suitable. Traditional neon is made of thin glass tubing which can easily crack or shatter.

Energy Efficiency,

As you would predict, being relatively modern in comparison to its glass counterpart, LED uses a lot less power. With an input voltage of 24V/120V rather than 3KV-18KV means lower electricity costs and greater safety.

When it comes to the installation and maintenance, LED’s are relatively easy to hang. If you can hang a picture, you are more than capable! Working with glass neon’s is a lot trickier and due the toxic gases and fragility of the signs, it is recommended that you get a trained technician to hang your sign.

Longevity.
This is a big deal and when comparing prices as glass is generally considerably more expensive, you’d expect it to come up trumps in the longevity department. Wrong! According to Custom Neon, a glass neon will generally last about 10000 hours, but an LED will last, on average, a staggering 5 times longer!! Clocking in 50000 hours!

One of the biggest draws for traditional neon, is its nostalgic appeal.  Iconic neon signs across the globe evoke childhood memories from milkshake shops and diners, to the flashing Open signs of the service station that was always so welcoming after a long drive.
Neon beer signs are the epitome in man cave decor, they seem to give a warmer deeper hue whilst the LED is brighter and more piercing.

(Great when you want your business to stand out, not so great when you are chilling with a few cold ones.)

Although, you could perhaps forgive the brighter light, in lieu of the annoying buzzing that traditional neon emanates!! Some people like the constant noise and can find it quite hypnotic.

If you are still uncertain what option would suit you best, reach out to a couple of companies. One that manufactures traditional neon and another that manufactures LED. Speak with the designers about exactly what you would like from your signage.

Each company should be able to provide a draft of your sign witch you can approve once you are happy.

This can be a real game changer, as LED can be manipulated into pretty much any shape and there are a lot more colours and shades to choose from. If you are looking for something quite intricate it may not always be feasible to go with glass.

Don’t be afraid to ask the designers for a revision if you are not 100% happy. Your business sign is the first impression that people will have of you and your company, so it’s imperative that you get it right.
