Hot Wheels has produced more than four billion die-cast cars in more than 800 models and 11,000 variations. The basic concept of the 1:64 scale hasn't changed, but the high tech tools to create and design them are far from basic.
The design team from Hot Wheels shared their visionary sketches of the three Fiesta Hero finalists' cars as part of the Ford Fiesta Movement. They took three finalists for a behind the scenes at Mattel headquarters for an exclusive look at how Hot Wheels are made - from sketch to final product.
The process starts with hand drawn sketches, and they've got a lot of that. Hot Wheels produces 240 models every year, including 50 brand new designs. Once they have those designs, the Hot Wheels design team busts out their high tech tools to translate a sketch into 3D.
They use a Geomagic Touch haptic device to create 3D files, a tool which is also used in scientific and medical simulations. It features a pen tip that provides force feedback to the user's hand, allowing them to feel the virtual objects as they are sculpting the clay.
After that's done, the 3D file is sent to their in-house prototyping facility which uses 3D printers to make them, allowing designers to quickly assess their work.
