Hype Nation's questionable reports, Jaebum will get hurt again


The countdown has started for the return of Jaebum's much talked about return. According to reports, he will be entering the country and begin crank in on the 20th for the filming of his debut movie, Hype Nation.


However, there are a lot of holes in their reports, making many cock their heads in confusion.


First of all, the main agent is unclear. There has never once been a reveal of the identities of the production company's name, investors, and distributing agencies. According to all of the information that has been leaked or reported, the producers are creating the movie with an American premier as its goal. However, none of the names of the producers, investors, or distributors have been revealed.


It seems like there is quite a bit of distance with Universal, Sony, and other major studios being involved with the investments or distributions. It is most likely a small scale movie or or an independent film.


Whatever the case is, the names of the production companies and the distributors must at least be revealed. When the movies of our nation are first exported overseas, the utmost importance that is stressed is the distributing agency. Distributing agencies are an absolute necessity for movies.


America may also be wide and largely populated but the director himself is also unfamiliar. It has been revealed that Ellen Kazarti and Christian Strickland will be joint directing the movie but searching their history or experience has proven to be impossible. One of them is said to be a music video director but there are at least hundreds of movie directors in Korea alone.


One of the most ill prepared aspects of the movie is the pre-production. The preparation period for the movie before the actual filming takes place takes up at least half of the production for the entire movie.


However, the director only entered Korea on the 10th. The fact that he's going to prepare for only nine days and go straight into filming makes absolutely no sense. To use an example, it's as if he stated that he would be cooking a Korean dish but in the end, puts out a hamburger.


What's even funnier is the leading actor, Jaebum's, every move. Normally, leading and supporting roles get together at least a month before crank in in order to get closer to one another and lead the scenarios so that the combinations are matched to the best of their abilities. If there is no understanding and interpretation of the movie and character amongst each other, there will be obstacles met along the way of filming.


There has never been any reports or even accounts of Jaebum practicing and synchronizing himself with the other staff members before the filming.


The only company that is promoting this movie is the agency of Jaebum's younger sister, DR Music.


In our country, no matter how small the movie is, the production company will always set aside a separate marketing team or hire a professional public relations agency. DR Music is an agency that specializes in finding new talent, producing music, and overseas concerts. They have no experience in promoting movies.


The only actors that are at least a bit familiar to Koreans are Dennis Oh and Hollywood actor Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa. Tagawa has starred in 'Memoirs of a Geisha,' 'Planet of the Apes,' and 'Art of War,' certainly a familiar actor with famous Hollywood experiences under his belt.


American hip hop group B2K is also said to be starring in the movie. They debuted in 2002 and recorded a gold and platinum in album sales but have not done any work since then. Recently, for years on end, they haven't even released any new music.


Associates of Hype Nation have also put out sprinklings of reports with the nuance that CJ Entertainment is associated with the movie but that too has yet to be confirmed and stands as a groundless rumor.


Conclusively, the movie is a question mark. Was this movie produced with the intent of releasing it in the American market, and if so, why was Jaebum, an unfamiliar name in the American market, cast, and why is more than half of the filming taking place in Korea?


Not only that but the location preparation in Korea that they will be filming more than half of the movie in is excessively shabby. Even shooting one episode of a drama will have more effort and production preparation put into it than this entire movie.


Whether Jaebum was kicked out of JYP due to a mistake he committed or whether he is a sacrifice, he is a figure that was once deeply hurt by Korea.


We watch with extremely worried eyes in case he is hurt once more.

하이프네이션' 의문투성이 행보, 재범 또 상처입을라


[티브이데일리=유진모 편집국장] 말도 많고 탈도 많던 재범의 국내복귀가 초읽기다. 소식통에 의하면 내일 재범이 입국하고 20일부터 그의 영화데뷔작 ‘하이프네이션’이 크랭크인한다고 한다.


그 러나 이 영화의 행보에 빈틈이 많아 고개를 갸우뚱하게 만든다.


일단 주체가 불분명하다. 제작사 투자사 배급사 등의 실체가 아직 한번도 공개된 바가 없다. 지금까지 흘러나온 정보 및 보도에 의하면 미국 개봉을 목표로 미국 제작진이 만든다고 하는데 그 제작사 및 배급사 투자사 등의 이름이 거론된 바가 없다.



그렇다면 일단 유니버설 소니 등 메이저 스튜디오의 투자나 배급과는 거리가 먼 것으로 보인다. 중간 규모의 영화이거나 독립영화일 가능성이 높다.
아무리 그렇다고 하더라도 최소한 제작사와 배급사 이름은 거론돼야 한다. 우리나라 영화가 해외에 수출될 때 가장 먼저 강조되는 게 배급사다. 그만큼 배급사는 영화에 있어서 절대적인 존재다.


아무리 미국땅이 넓고 사람이 많다지만 감독도 생소하다. 앨런 카잘티와 크리스티안 스트릭랜드라는 두사람이 공동연출한다고 하는데 연출경력 조사가 불가능하다. 둘중 한명은 뮤직비디오 감독 출신이라고 하는데 국내 뮤직비디오 감독만 수백명이다.


가장 어설픈 점은 프리프로덕션이다. 영화는 특히 사전준비가 제작의 절반이라고 해도 과언이 아닐 정도로 중요하다.


그런데 감독이 지난 10일 입국했다. 9일동안 준비하고 찍겠다는 것은 영화 매카니즘상 도저히 납득이 가지 않는 프리프로덕션이다. 한마디로 한정식 요리하겠다고 해놓고 막상 햄버거 내놓는 격이다.


더 웃기는 것은 주연배우 재범의 행보다. 보통 주조연배우들은 최소한 크랭크인 한달전부터 모여 서로 친해지는 시간을 갖고 시나리오 리딩을 하며 콤비네이션을 맞추는데 최선을 다한다. 서로 작품과 캐릭터에 대한 해석과 이해가 있지 않고선 촬영이 삐걱거리기 때문이다.



그 런데 지금까지 재범이 사전 연습과 리등과 호흡맞추기를 했다는 얘기나 정황은 전혀 들리지도 보이지도 않는다.


현재 이 영화 관련 홍보를 해주는 곳은 바로 재범의 여동생 역에 캐스팅된 새 걸그룹 라니아의 티애가 소속된 DR뮤직이다.


우리 나라 영화계의 경우 아무리 작은 영화라도 제작사 자체에 마케팅팀을 두거나 정석대로 전문 홍보대행사에 맡긴다. DR뮤직은 가수발굴, 음반제작, 해외콘서트 에이전시 등이 주업무고 홍보대행 그것도 영화홍보대행은 한번도 해본 적이 없다.


그 외 출연하는 배우중 한국 관객에 낯익은 배우로는 미국적의 탤런트 데니스 오와 일본 출신의 할리우드 배우 캐리 히로유키 타가와 정도다. 타가와는 ‘게이샤의 추억’ ‘혹성탈출’ ‘아트 오브 워’ 등 할리우드 유명작을 통해 우리 눈에 낯익은 배우다.


또한 미국 힙합그룹 B2K가 출연한다고 한다. 이들은 2002년 데뷔한 해 골드(50만장 판매)와 플래티넘(100만장)을 기록했을 뿐 그후로는 활동이 그리 두드러지지 않는다. 최근 몇 년간은 음반발표도 미미하다.


또 ‘하이프네이션’ 측에서는 국내 CJ엔터테인먼트가 관련됐다는 뉘앙스를 흩뿌리고 있지만 확인결과 사실무근이었다.


결론은 퀘스천 마크다. 과연 이 영화가 미국시장에서 개봉할 목적으로 시작됐는지, 그렇다면 미국시장에서 생소한 재범을 주연으로 캐스팅한 이유는 뭐고 촬영의 절반 이상을 한국에서 하겠다는 이유는 무엇인지 도대체 감을 잡기 힘들다.



더구나 영화의 절반 이상을 차지하는 한국로케이션의 사전준비가 허술해도 지나치게 허술하다. 드라마 한편을 찍겠다고 해도 이렇게 하지는 않는다.
재범이 잘못을 저질러 JYP에서 쫓겨났든, 아니면 대를 위한 희생을 감내했든 어쨌든 그는 한국에서 한번 큰 상처를 입었다.


혹시라도 이번에 또 다른 상처를 입지 않을까 상당히 걱정스럽다.
