Whether it’s dance or song, G.NA’s first full-length album is missing nothing. Putting her album release aside, she has been putting a bleeding effort into an aspect of music that she’s been struggling with.
G.NA recently met with a reporter and said “In this album, I sang every part of the song personally, even the chorus. My sense of pitch is not the best and I had to add harmony to it so I suffered a lot. However, I was given a lot in return for my suffering.”
G.NA debuted with ‘I’ll Back Off So You Can Live Better’ and heard herself called the ‘super rookie.’ People believed that her looks and reserved musical cultivation was the reason why. G.NA remembers though, when she was in the preparation stages of her debut album, she was constantly heard that she was ‘tone-deaf.’
G.NA explained that, “During the past three years, I heard that I was tone-deaf everyday. I thought I was dead and I listened to all the keys that didn’t work and I practiced it all over again. While doing that, my ears became a bit more open. But when I heard that I had to personally add harmonization in this album, I felt dread.”
There is a saying that when a singer feels his or her voice sounds best at the chorus. G.NA herself agreed with this saying but to try the dreaded harmonization was hard work. But just because you overcome one limit, she couldn’t just sit there either and she was very frustrated.
G.NA said “In the company, it’s okay to take some time, so I slowly gained strength and did it. Just recording the song itself was hard enough. Thinking that I had to do the chorus too made me resentful. However, living in the recording room enough allowed me to finish it in the end. After winning the battle with myself, I gained confidence.”
This was not the only thing. She stationed herself next to the producer and personally sang and adjusted herself whenever a pitch was created. This was how the songs were created. Finally, G.NA personally guide-recorded with her own English lyrics. She then asked Wheesung and Onion to write something for her and the album was created.
This was how her first full-length album, ‘Black & White’ was created. Title song ‘Black & White’ uses black and white as a metaphor to express the love story of two totally contrasting people. However, they have to be together and were destined to be together. These splashy lyrics were the creation of Onion.
Last year, ‘I’ll Back Off So You Can Live Better’ was a track that brought G.NA to the top. Producer Kim Donghoon boasted again with ‘Black & White.’ He combined a playful synth sound with a rock guitar-base. Reviews state the extravagant melody and G.NA’s powerful yet delicate vocals stood out.
