Some rappers have some bling in their teeth. Now you can too, because dentists may soon start fighting bone loss by covering our teeth in nanodiamonds. It makes repairing teeth quicker, cheaper and less painful.

Currently, doctors are forced to use invasive surgery during jaw and tooth repair operations. They stick a sponge full of bone-growth stimulating proteins near the offending area. Needless to say, it's a lot of pain. These kind of surgeries are also time consuming and expensive.

A study led by Dr. Dean Ho, a professor of oral biology and medicine at the UCLA School of Dentistry is going to change all that. The team found that nanodiamonds "bind rapidly to both bone morphogenetic protein and fibroblast growth factor", which essentially encourage bone and cartilage to rebuild themselves.

The application? Just a simple injection or oral rinse. Done.

Ho's team proved that nanodiamonds may even help in treating multiple forms of cancer, though there's no word on whether we will start receiving these bone saving diamonds at your local dentist's office just yet.

One thing is for sure: anything that is less painful is a welcome.[Geekosystem via UCLA]
