Samsung's latest memory chips are so efficient, they could make 4GB of RAM in phones the industry standard. Say hoorah. 4K phones could be very real.

Samsung's first 1GB low power DDR4 memory chips uses a higher bandwidth than its predecessors. It runs at 3.1 Gbps and provides a 50 percent speed boost over existing DDR3 based chips. The new chips use 40 percent less power. That would make four 1GB chips layered together to provide the highest capacity mobile phone RAM currently available.

The new memory will go into mass production next year, but it is intended for use in ultrabooks, tablets and high-end smartphones.

Bottomline is, your smartphone is about to get supersized.  [Samsung]
