Dolby Laboratories founder Ray Dolby has passed at the age of 80. He's the man responsible for awesome sound in movies. His technology is used in basically every cinema you go to .

Born in Portland, Oregon, 1944, he earned a BA in engineering in Stanford in 1957 where he moved to England and earned his PhD in Physics from Cambridge in 1961. He founded Dolby Labs in 1964 and their work has since focused on sound.

They developed an analog system for multi-channel sound playback for film - Dolby Stereo, which was the key innovation to surround tracks to film sound tapes.
