Is Google trying to get into Nest's space? According to rumors, they are testing a new kind of internet connected thermostat. This will allow homeowners to track energy activity and adjust usage remotely.

If you remember, Google has already done this before when it developed PowerMeter - which was a web dashboard that tracked a home's energy use. It died in 2011 because Google said it was too difficult to scale up.

In comparison, the Nest employs a dial to adjust your home's temperature. The unit displays the current temperature and glows red if the heater is enabled and blue if the A/C is keeping you from sticking to your chair. Nest will learn your schedule and begin to set the temperature on its own.

Now that Google has seen how cool it can become, they might be rethinking it. The Information suggests that Google might source devices from Ecobee—which already makes smart thermostats—rather than making its own.
