It is pretty awkward to "like" something on Facebook when the post in question is about something sad. Maybe a loss of a loved one, or some other sad Facebook status.
So now, Facebook is toying around with the idea of adding a
"sympathize" button. A developer recently introduced the idea at a Facebook hackathon. It is to give users a way to acknowledge things without "liking" them.
Here's how it would work:
When you write a Facebook status, you have the option of choosing to share how you're feeling from a drop down list of emotions. If you select a negative emotion from the list, the like button will be relabeled as "sympathize".
