There is a version of Office 365 for the iPad. Steve Ballmer confirmed it. The bad news? It won't be available until the suite of productivity is retooled for the modern user interface in Windows 8.

Ballmer shared the news on stage at the Gartner Symposium and spoke about topics related to the Windows platform and the company's process of retooling its software and services with a "common programming interface",  CNET reported.

The iPad will be picked up when there's a touch first user interface.

The most recent version of Microsoft Office was designed with Windows 8 in mind, and it doesn't run in the touch-first environment of the modern UI.

Microsoft is developing a version of Office that runs in the new UI, but there's no indication when it would be ready. New versions are typically released every 3 to 4 years.

The Daily published photos of what looked like an iPad running the Office suite, but it was never released. The iPhone version however, is stripped down version of the main Office apps.
