Headaches are a common problem, and almost everyone gets them from time to time. However, the most effective treatment changes depending on the type of headache you have. Most headaches are not medical emergencies, but if you are experiencing symptoms like slurred speech or dizziness along with your headache, you should seek medical help as quickly as you can. Normally, though,
headaches can be treated at home or by visiting your regular doctor.
Some of
the different types of headaches are more common than others. Most of us have experienced brain-freeze, a sharp headache following the consumption of cold foods or drinks. These headaches go away on their own and can be avoided by consuming cold things more slowly.
Caffeine withdrawal is another common cause of headaches, especially ones that show up if you’ve slept in later than usual, and can be treated by having a cup of your favourite caffeinated beverage and cutting down on your overall caffeine intake.
If your headache feels like a build up of pressure or a constant ache, rather than throbbing, it is likely a tension headache. These can be caused by stress or even bad posture. You can fight these headaches by using ibuprofen or aspirin, and try tackling your stress levels, too.
Lots of people describe very bad headaches as migraines, but these are actually a specific kind of headache which usually causes light sensitivity. The best way to treat them is to learn what has triggered them so that you can avoid these activities where possible. Whilst they are happening, the best treatments are ibuprofens or triptans.
Migraines are sometimes mistaken for sinus headaches, which are caused by pressure in the sinuses behind your nose. However, true sinus headaches involve some green-coloured mucus from the nose, caused by an infection, and are not associated with light-sensitivity. Treating the infection is the best way to get rid of these headaches, using antibiotics or decongestant medications.
If your headache is only on one side of your head, and the pain is extreme, it might be a cluster headache. These headaches are incredibly painful and recur frequently, but they can be treated with triptans or oxygen, which can be prescribed to you by your doctor.
Some headaches are caused by your teeth. There are a few dental conditions that can cause headaches, so try mentioning them next time you visit your dentist, who will be able to treat them using medications or physical interventions like bite guards.
Some headaches are actually caused by over-using medications. This effect can be produced quickly, so avoid using painkillers unless you really need them. If you suspect your headaches are caused by using too many medications, you will need to talk to your doctor to find out which medications have caused it, and the best way to make them stop.
Now you can try working out what's causing yours, and the best way to get rid of it. If your headaches are frequent or particularly painful, it's always best to consult your doctor.
