Here’s the followup to the earlier post we did last weekend on the cheapest new iPhone plans. This post here is going to enlighten you to get the brand new iPhone 6S or 6S Plus in the most affordable way possible. Check it out! We ranked all the telcos by the cheapest and most value-for-money plans they have.

The official retail prices for the new iPhone 6S and 6S Plus is as follow in Malaysia:

iPhone 6s, 16GB: RM3,199
iPhone 6s, 64GB: RM3,699
iPhone 6s, 128GB: RM4,199
iPhone 6s Plus: 16GB: RM3,699
iPhone 6s Plus: 64GB: RM4,199
iPhone 6s Plus, 128GB: RM4,699

The iPhone 6S or 6S Plus can be ordered from the Apple Store, but looking at the price above, you’re better off getting it with a plan from a telco.

Which telco should you get it from?

Go for the one that offers the best value in data, because you’ll be surprised just how few calls you make these days!

Here’s a breakdown ranking the cheapest and most affordable plans to the most expensive:

U Mobile:


Prices shown in table above are inclusive of 6% GST.

 U Mobile stands at the cheapest with an RM40 plan that offers up to 1.5GB of data with its device price at RM2,671. Its most expensive plan is at RM130 with up to 10GB of data and unlimited calls to all networks with the device price being from RM1,908 making it the most value savings in offerings compared to other telcos.

 One unique proposition from U Mobile is that you get to purchase the device with a financing plan called Flexi-U MicroCredit - making it even easier for customers to own the latest iPhone.

The Flexi-U MicroCredit offers flexibility and value to customers more than ever before. Customer can now choose their loan amount ranging from RM1,000 to RM3,500, pay the remaining by cash or credit card and choose a flexible repayment period ranging from 12 to 36 months for the remainder payment.

Conclusion:

  • U Mobile has the best entry level plan with the most value compared to Digi’s RM50/month and Maxis’s RM50/month plans. i40 offers subsidized iPhone price and contract freedom while Digi and Maxis locks you in for 12 months contract , and still don’t offer you a subsidized phone. Celcom entry level plan starts at RM85
  • Its most expensive plan i130 offers 10GB internet and Unlimited calls to all networks. This would definitely suits iPhone users purely because iPhone consumes more data. Compare with Maxis’ One plan RM128 which only gives customers 3GB internet
  • Easy financing for any model of the new iPhones.
  • No upfront / advanced payment needed for all new customers who purchase via credit card and auto debit.

Digi:

It seems like Digi is offering 5 plans, but there are actually a total of 10 plans! Their plans range from RM50 being its cheapest to RM238 being its most expensive. It basically works this way. You can choose either a good amount of voice call or a good package for high speed data plan.

There is no a combination on this. Its device price offerings are comparative to other telcos, but it’s not currently the cheapest in terms of value (device + data + voice.) Here’s a breakdown of their plans:





Conclusion:

  • The device price for each model may be slightly cheaper, but it is offset by the lack of value given in their plans (eg. Data quota is less compared to others.)
  • Devices are not subsidized by the plan and customers will have to pay a higher upfront payment.

Celcom:

Coming in third is Celcom. While their plans start at RM85, they've got one of the cheapest device prices. They do offer quite a bit of data to go along with each plan, and the devices get cheaper as the plan option gets more expensive.






Conclusion:

  • They give quite a bit of data but start off at a higher price point.
  • Advance payment for the phone is more expensive than most other telcos, making the initial investment quite high.
  • At its lowest package, it is the second best value saving plan compared to U Mobile's i90.

Maxis:

Maxis is the most expensive of the lot, and the most confusing one because they’ve got too many plans to offer. Its cheapest plan is iValue Simple at RM50 with 1GB of data, and its most expensive plan is iValue 3 at RM250 with 6GB of data. They do offer iPhones on their MaxisOne Plan, offering unlimited calls to all networks. However, data quota is limited. RM128 only comes with 3GB


Conclusion:

  • Most expensive plan(s) in terms of value of data given for each plan compared to other telcos.
  • Advance payment amount is pretty high, though it will be refunded up to a maximum of 5 months.
  • Device price is comparable to most telcos, and possibly slightly cheaper by only a bit, but is offset by the lack of data value given in the plans you choose.
  • Total cost of ownership for Maxis OnePlan 128 over 24 months exceeds over RM5,000.
  • Zerolution does not include the iPhones.

So which model should I get?

We don’t recommend you take the 16GB at all. It’s just a waste of your time, after all, everything has become richer and larger in file size! The 64GB model is a solid middle ground worth your money. Firstly, you never have to worry about having enough space to take a photo. 128GB on the other hand is probably an overkill.

When will it be available?

The new iPhones will be available on the October 16th, making it three-weeks earlier than what we got in 2014.
