A team of researchers from the University of Texas led by Professor Ray Baughman have just made some wicked strong artificial muscle fibers from nothing more than fishing wire.

According to the paper, the research team showed how twisting fishing wire into super tight coils creates a super strong fiber. It contracts like human muscle when heated and it is 100 times stronger than the same length and weight of a human muscle.

Pretty incredible right? Watch the video:

There could be tons of applications for this type of synthetic muscle fiber. Dr. Baughman explains: "Today's most advanced humanoid robots, prosthetic limbs and wearable exoskeletons are limited by motors and hydraulic systems, whose size and weight restrict dexterity, force generation and work capability," he said in a statement.
