Shaving your facial hair is something that all men have to do, although some need to do it more than others. But regular shaving can have adverse effects on your skin, especially if you aren't using the right methods. If you're doing it wrong, you could be cutting yourself, causing ingrown hairs or ending up with shaving rash all the time.

One of the biggest considerations for shaving your face is what sort of shaver or razor to use. Some men prefer to quick and simple method of an electric shaver while others swear that a wet shave gives them a better result. If you're not sure which one is right for you, take a look at the pros and cons of each of these shaving tools and techniques.

Electric Shavers

Many men find electric shavers quick and convenient. There's no mess, and you don't usually have to go over the same area many times like you do with a manual razor. They're extremely portable, and you can use them anywhere with an electrical source. Plus, you don't have to worry about getting the blades and any shaving cream onto planes. There's no fussing about with creams or foams of any kind, and they can give a more accurate shave, with fewer problems. However, they don't give as close a shave as other methods, and you usually can't use them in the shower. Needing an electrical outlet or batteries can be an inconvenience, and they can be expensive and require a higher level of maintenance.

Manual Razors

Manual razors are easy to use compared to other methods, and are often the first tool that any young man uses to learn how to shave. They're inexpensive in the short-term, even though you need to use shaving cream or foam with them. They're also easily replaced or renewed; they are highly portable, and they give a closer shave than an electric shaver. But using them can take a long time, and you need to replace the blades often. You also experience a greater chance of nicks, cuts and ingrown hairs if you're not shaving correctly.

Double-edge Razors

A double- or dual-edge razor is an alternative method of shaving, which can help men who are prone to ingrown hairs. The shave they give isn't as close as a manual razor, so the blades don't get as close to the skin. Using this method can be the cheapest one over time, although finding a decent handle can be expensive. However, the blades stay sharp for a long time and are inexpensive. It does take some time to get used to this type of razor, however, and some men with heavy facial hair find that they don't give the closest shave.

Straight Razors

Many men are scared of straight razors, reminded of scenes from Sweeney Todd. But men who use them swear by them for a quality shave. However, learning to use one can take a while, even if they give a closer shave than other methods.
