Algeria became the first African nation to advance to the second round of the World Cup in 1982. But instead, Austria and West Germany colluded to score one goal for West Germany, and then calling it a day. This is the reason why the final day of group play happens at the same time.

6. Andres Escobar’s Own Goal Leads to Murder

Columbian captain Andres Escobar made a costly mistake on the field in 1994 by scoring an own goal against the United States. That mistake cost him his life, because it caused subsequent gambling losses for some of the country's top drug lords. He was shot by two men.

7. The Battle of Santiago

Chile's game against Italy must be the most deplorable game in the sport's history. The first foul happened in 12 seconds. Giorgio Ferrini was sent off in the twelfth minute after a foul on Honorino Landa. The police had to drag him off the field. Chile went on to win 2-0 after police intervened to regain order from all the fighting.

Austria changed the game by focusing on possession and short passing. They lost to Italy in the round of 16 but it was just because of that, that made them legends. The team was dominant for almost a decade. Then a year before the 1938 World Cup, months before the tournament, Austria was taken over by the Nazis, and their team absorbed into the Germans.

10. Maradona's Hand of God

The most controversial goal ever was made by Diego Maradona. The game happened in 1986, Mexico City, in the final match against England. A crafty Maradona managed to sneak past the referee's field of vision and used his hand to score a goal. It was so obvious that Maradona later said that he told his teammates to celebrate the goal, otherwise officials would take the score away.
