What is it about the word "Feminist" that can stir so much debate? It might have to do with how many people (including famous female personalities) who keep mistakenly assuming that the label refers solely to women who hate like men.
In this clip, director Joss Whedon delivers the perfect speech about what the word really means while attending Equality Now's "Make Equality Reality" event on Nov. 4. It's a pretty long video, but definitely worth the watch especially the part where Whedon calls out Katy Perry:
"The great Katy Perry once said -- I'm paraphrasing -- 'I'm not a feminist but I like it when women are strong.' That's lovely, Katy. Don't know why she feels the need to say the first part," Whedon says. With the introduction of "genderist," "Katy Perry won't say, 'I'm not a feminist but I like strong women,' she'll say, 'I'm not a genderist but sometimes I like to dress up pretty.' And that'll be fine."
