Twitter may sound like a weird sounding name, but earlier suggestions of the company were more worse sounding. During a research for a new book about the site, Nick Bilton unearthed the early name and logo ideas. Seriously, thank goodness they settled on Twitter.
Bilton says that the founders of Twitter bounced around a lot of ideas. Biz Stone also created some logos. And they were super ugly.

Needless to say, it was shelved in favour of Linda Gavin's rather more memorable blue logo.
