Are the speakers you have a tad bit opaque? A bunch of Harvard scientists have just built a stretchable ionic speaker out of gel that is as transparent as a window. It can play the entire audible spectrum from 20 hertz to 20 kilohertz and sounds pretty good too.

Made of a clear piece of stretchable, insulating rubber sandwiched between two layers of hydrogen, the resultant shape is hooked up to copper electrodes and send a high voltage electric blast through the whole thing causing the rubber to vibrate.

It also doesn't look like a speaker at all, but what's getting scientists excited is the ionic conductor. Ionic devices sends signals over ions, and this is the first device that can power conventional electronics.
