It was announced earlier today that DBSK has been chosen as one of the performers for Kōhaku Uta Gassen (more commonly known as Kohaku) 2009 and that Big Bang, who were on the initial list, has not been chosen.
The Kōhaku Uta Gassen or Kohaku is an annual New Year's Eve music show broadcasted on both radio and television by NHK and has been around since 1951. It's a VERY big deal to be included on the list of performers as the selection is based on record sales and various other demographics - you literally have to be one of the biggest stars in Japan to appear. The show centers around 2 groups of performers (female and made performers - the red and white teams) going head-to-head and ultimately leading to a winner.
Big Bang have apparently mentioned on numerous occasions that they want to perform at this year's show but despite apparently being shortlisted, they failed to be put on the final list. This is the second time DBSK have been invited to the show, they appeared for the first time last year.
