Singapore media have not reported much about Korea?s popular idol group SHINee, but with the increase in number of teenagers frequently using the computer, fans usually get their information about their idols from the internet. SHINee?s charm is irresistible, during the recent Singapore Entertainment Awards 2010, fans screamed continuously when SHINee went on stage to perform. Besides receiving the New Generation Artiste award, SHINee also performed three of their hit songs and their fans all screamed and cheered loudly for them.

In a ?Most Popular Kpop Group? poll on yzone.omy.sg, within 7 days, nearly 300 Kpop fans voted for their favourite idols. Among the groups, SHINee was the second most popular with a total vote of 23.8%, just slightly behind Super Junior, who has a total vote of 27.9%; third is SS501, with a total vote of 13.5%. Other nominees included F.T Island, Big Bang, Wondergirls, DBSK, etc.

Also, omy conducted an interview with 40 publics, and nearly half of them know SHINee. Among these interviewees, majority of them are students, aged between 13 and 25, and a minority of them are above 25. Most of them got to know about SHINee through their friends and classmates.

A Korean female interviewee expressed that SHINee is very popular in Korea, and most of the people who like them are teenagers. However, she herself prefers another Kpop group. The results of this interview have shown that SHINee?s fans in Singapore are mostly girls. Two girls who were interviewed also said that if SHINee holds a concert in Korea, they would not hesitate to fly to Korea to support their idols.

Besides interviewing the public, omy also interviewed 2 mega fans of SHINee. When SHINee came to Singapore recently, they chased their idols day and night, and although it is tiring, they enjoyed the process and gained new friendships. They have shared their thoughts about chasing stars and SHINee-related products they own.

The interview has also shown that SHINee fans mainly get their information from the internet and that Singapore?s local media have been reporting very little about them. In the first episode of an upcoming series of reports, Korean music guru and ex- radio DJ 陈丽仪 and NUS researcher 廖继权 will share with us the reason of this trend.

In 2008, when SHINee first debuted, everyone had the impression that they are young and inexperienced, but in a short period of two years, SHINee had grown and becoming more mature in their style. Be it in looks, music, fashion style or dance, looking at these five boys? perfection, who would be able to resist them. Then, you realize, the youngest member is only 17 years old.

This Kpop group of five boys, aged between 17 and 21, has been known as the trend setters. SHINee is able to shine as they had been training for a long time and their ages are near to their fans?.

Researcher from NUS, 廖继权, expresses that with the broadcast of Singapore?s very own talent search program Campus Superstar, students? dream of becoming a star is not far, and people realize that their idols need not be older than them. So SHINee is able to become closer to their fans, because they are idols as well as friends.

SHINee?s agency, SM Entertainment, is well-known and influences greatly on the Korean entertainment industry. Thus, it is a great combination when a group of talented youngsters meet a good agency. Ex-DJ, 陈丽仪, said that Korean entertainment industry has their own way of nurturing their artistes; from dance steps to media exposure, their agency ensures that the artistes from their company show their best to the people.

And SHINee debuted on stage under this environment. In 2008, SHINee released their first mini album ?Replay? and it became very popular, then, they went on to perform the song ?Stand By Me? for the popular drama ?Boys Over Flowers?, opening their door towards the Chinese entertainment industry. Recently, their hit song from their newest mini album ?Ring Ding Dong? had become a favourite among the teenagers.

Besides having all these advantages, Scorpio East Holdings Director 刘丽萍 thinks that the hallyu wave represents a new and unique lifestyle, and SHINee is able to showcase this in their own way.

She is also observing the development of hallyu wave in Singapore and although there is no negotiation between them and Korean artistes to perform in Singapore now, there is a great possibility that they would do it in the future.
