[2PM Concert Review] They have demonstrated that they are the top of the idols but their performances leave a 2% sense of disappointment
Omitted summary of concert events, can be read here.
The stages that the original beastly idols 2PM presented were vastly different. They wet the stages with their sweat as if they were showing that this was what is truly called the charisma of a man and this was how an idol group's stage was supposed to be.
However, that was it. There were no detailed sounds as characteristic of the Olympic Arena. Only the rhythm line rang out as the sound of music broke in the atmosphere, leaving their performances with much to be desired musically.
The barylites, moving lights, and pin spotlights were successful in highlighting the handsome features of the members and their bodies but the overall effects were less than expected. The members moved passionately amongst the gas lights and fireworks but as is usually the limit of idol concerts, any sense of amazement ended after 40 minutes into their concert.
When Nichkhun came out holding an acoustic guitar, all sense of strength was drained from the audience. He playfully strummed 'Three Little Bears' until he moved onto his more serious performance of 'More Than Words.' However, he showed the definite limits of an idol and the performance was better off not having been performed at all.
He showed off his lacking vocal talents and never even finished his awkward guitar strumming. When the crowd first held anticipation with the thought, 'An idol performing a guitar solo?' Nichkhun immediately dropped the anticipation to the floor into disappointment. His arpeggio was awkward and he soon cut the performance off.
A concert means live singing. Even super bands may sometimes include pre recorded session parts but the point of a concert is to recreate the sounds in a live setting. That in itself is a performance and musicality at its best.
But since idol groups cannot perform anything (TN: instruments), they have no choice but to be met with limits in their concerts. Regardless, even if they are an idol group, they must at least think to put up a session band with the appropriate sills and perform at least a song or two that they themselves can perform. A concert is not an easy going broadcast show.
Anyone can tell that 2PM is one of the top idol groups. They have nothing higher to achieve. However, that only means that they have no way left but down now.
Appearing on motorcycles to emphasize their tough manliness while dancing to cute songs with angel wings tied to their backs is one of the greatest strengths but also one of the greatest weaknesses of idol groups.
If they wish to upgrade themselves into true musicians to ensure a long career, they must learn how to perform and compose.
The scene of the audience was very diverse. There were Korean fans with low teens that came with their fathers and mothers along with those in their twenties. Japanese, Chinese, and other Asian older fans could also be seen. This shows that 2PM has the chance to mature from an idol group into an 'adult group.'
2PM's handsome features and their chiseled bodies are their biggest strengths and most definitely a competitive force in the market. But if they wish to avoid the fate of HOT or Sechskies, they must now begin to sharpen their musicality.
