Kim Yu-na took home much more than a gold medal over the past year. The figure skating champion ranked No. 5 on a list of the world's highest-paid female athletes.
According to Forbes magazine on Thursday, Kim earned US$9.7 million between June 2009 and June 2010, including prize money, endorsements and appearance fees. The sum also includes a $1 million bonus from sponsor Kookmin Bank for winning the gold at the Vancouver Olympics.
Tennis stars were the biggest earners. Maria Sharapova of Russia made $24.5 million to top the list, while sisters Serena and Venus Williams of the U.S. came in second and third, respectively. At fourth was U.S. auto racer Danica Patrick.
