Introducing FireChat, a new app from Open Garden that enables you to chat with others even when there's no cellular signal. And it's all thanks to a little-known feature called the Multipeer Connectivity Framework that arrived with iOS 7.
Once you sign up and pick a screen name, you're dropped into FireChat's "Everyone" chatroom room. There's also a "Nearby" option which lets you chat with users who are within Wi-Fi or Bluetooth range (about 30 feet) even if you don't have any reception.
Sound like the perfect app for groups of traveling friends or even wannabe spies, since it effectively lets you communicate off the grid. Get it on itunes.
