There’s nothing as refreshing as escaping into your air-conditioned home on a hot summer day. However, if you don’t properly maintain your unit, your system may fail you when you need it most. If you have been slacking on maintaining your central air conditioner, you need to check out these four tips about how to maintain your system so it works all summer.
Replace the Filter
One of the easiest things you can do to maintain your air-conditioning unit is to replace the filter, which should be done at least once right before the cooling season begins. However, you should replace it more often if you live in a dusty environment or have pets. A dirty filter can’t block as many allergens or irritants, and if these get into your system they can decrease efficiency or worsen allergies and breathing problems (asthma, COPD, etc.) if they reach your living spaces. Some filters are reusable, so you can simply remove them, wash them and replace them.
Clean the Coils, Fins, and Drains
You’ll also want to clean parts of the system that tend to get dirty, such as the coils, fins, and drains. The evaporator and condenser coil may occasionally collect dust and dirt, which decreases efficiency. Clean it with a soft brush and coil cleaner. To clean the fins, use a garden hose with a strong spray or fin cleaning spray. Do not use a pressure washer because it can damage the structure. Last, the condenser drains may get clogged, which increases moisture in your home. Use a stiff wire to remove any debris form the condense drains.
Repair Bent Fins
Another problem with fins is that they can easily become bent. Bent fins reduce efficiency by blocking airflow, so you’ll want to straighten any bent ones you spot. You can purchase a special tool called a fin comb, which is specifically designed to straightening fins, but a small butter knife works too. Just be careful not to insert the knife too far into the system or else you may damage tubing. Schedule Routine Professional Services
This leads to improved airflow, cooler temperatures while using less energy, and better indoor air quality. During an air conditioner tune up, the technician will check electrical connections, coils, blower parts, refrigerant levels, thermostat, air pressure, and drip pans/lines. The system will also be cleaned (inside and out), and all moving parts will be lubricated.
Just like every appliance in your home, your central air-conditioning unit needs routine maintenance to keep it working efficiently and effectively. You can do a lot of maintenance on your own to keep it working between professional services. If your system hasn’t been maintained in a while, it’s time to call to schedule a tune up.
