The latest research has found some key traits which might indicate an early sign of depression in guys. According to Dutch and American researchers, those who take longer to recover from negative emotions were more likely to experience depressive symptoms, which could eventually develop to a clinical diagnosis.

Major signs to watch out for include having trouble sleeping, difficulty completing work tasks, avoid social situations, are constantly exhausted, and have physical symptoms like headaches and backaches.  And sadness isn't necessarily the only feeling you should look out for: a study found that depressed men also reported higher rates of anger, substance abuse, and risk-taking compared to women.

The reason why bouncing back is so much harder for depressed people is because the mood disorder affects multiple biological systems, including sleep, energy, motivation, and cognition. Exposure to external stressors like being reprimanded by your boss can also trigger or worsen symptoms. This creates more obstacles to cross, thereby slowing their rebound back to normalcy.

So what's the best way to beat these major blues. Studies show that even low levels of physical activity for half an hour a day can help to ward off depression. Other than managing depressive symptoms through exercise, you can also try cutting back on caffeine and alcohol, or confiding your feelings to a friend or family member. But if the symptoms continue drag on for months, it's best to seek help from a clinical professional.
