We lie every day but it turns out there's an easy tell. It takes much longer to lie when texting, according to a new study.
Researchers at Brigham Young University found that texts containing a lie took longer to compose compared to truthful texts. They found that through exact measurement and modeling they could predict if an SMS was a lie. "Unfortunately, humans are terrible at detecting deception. We’re creating methods to correct that," BYU researcher Tom Meservy said.
The study looked at 100 subjects who answered 30 questions in an IM/texting style conversation ona computer. The subjects took 10 percent longer writing their lies and took longer to revise them too.
We're so bad at identifying lies, we can only do so 54 percent of the time, and most of the time it's just us guessing. What do you think? Ever told a lie through a text? [Huffington Post]
